CBSE Class 12 Chapter Wise Weightage 2026 | Angle Tuition

CBSE Class 12 chapter-wise weightage 2026 is the first thing your child needs before starting revision. Without it, students spend equal time on all topics , even ones that carry very few marks.

The official CBSE unit-wise weightage for 2026 is published at cbseacademic.nic.in. Physics and Biology carry 70 marks in theory. Mathematics, Accountancy, Business Studies, and Economics carry 80 marks in theory. The remaining 20,30 marks come from practicals or internal assessment, depending on the subject.

This guide is for Class 12 students and parents in India and the GCC. It covers all major CBSE subjects , Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, English, Accountancy, Business Studies, and Economics. All marks data is taken directly from the official CBSE curriculum and Sample Question Papers (SQP) for 2025,26 at cbseacademic.nic.in.

Why Weightage Matters for Your Child

  • Focus more time on high-mark units first.
  • Build a revision timetable that makes sense.
  • Feel less stressed because the syllabus feels planned.
  • Use the last two weeks to revise smart, not panic.

Most students study hard. But many of them study without a plan. They give equal time to every chapter , whether it carries 5 marks or 35 marks.

That is where unit-wise weightage helps. It tells your child exactly how many marks each unit carries. They can then spend more time where it counts most.

One of our students at Angle Tuition was scoring 62% in Accountancy. Her tutor checked the official CBSE marks distribution. She was spending as much time on a 6-mark topic as on Partnership Accounts, which carries over 36 marks. Three weeks of focused preparation on the right units pushed her board score to 87%.

The subject did not change. The study plan did.

What Knowing Weightage Helps Your Child Do

How CBSE Decides the Marks for Each Unit

  • All marks data in this blog comes directly from the CBSE official website , cbseacademic.nic.in.
  • 50% of the paper now has Competency-Based Questions (CBQs). These test how well students understand and apply concepts , not just memorise them.
  • Every unit appears in the exam. No unit is officially dropped, even ones with fewer marks.
  • NCERT textbooks are the main source. Over 80% of questions come directly from NCERT.

CBSE releases an official curriculum and Sample Question Papers (SQP) every year. You can find them on cbseacademic.nic.in . These documents show how many marks each unit carries in the theory paper.

One important thing to know: CBSE gives unit-wise marks, not chapter-wise marks. For Mathematics, the official syllabus even says "no chapter-wise weightage." This means all chapters inside a unit are equally important.

How to Use Weightage to Study Smarter

Knowing the marks is step one. Using that information to build a plan is step two. Here is what actually works for Class 12 board preparation.

  1. Finish the full NCERT syllabus first. No unit can be skipped , even low-mark ones appear in the exam. Read our guide on how to solve NCERT exercises effectively before starting revision.
  2. Find your child's weak units and check how many marks they carry. A weak area in Calculus (35 marks) needs more attention than a weak area in Linear Programming (5 marks).
  3. Give more time to high-mark units , but cover every unit at least once.
  4. Solve the official CBSE SQP and past papers. This is the best way to know what question types actually appear. See our guide on whether CBSE sample papers are enough for boards.
  5. Practise Competency-Based Questions (CBQs) separately. These now make up 50% of the paper. Check our guide on what CBQs are and how to prepare for them .
  6. Revise weak units every week , not only in the last few days before the exam.

30-Day Revision Plan for Class 12

This plan works best when the NCERT syllabus is already done. Use it in the final month before the board exam.

30-Day Revision Plan for Class 12

WeekWhat to Do
Week 1 (Days 1,7)Revise the highest-mark units in each subject , Calculus, Optics, Electrostatics, Genetics, Partnership Accounts, and Literature. Solve past 3 years of NCERT examples and previous year questions.
Week 2 (Days 8,14)Cover medium-mark units , Vectors, Magnetism, EMI, Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Financial Management. Attempt one full sample paper over the weekend.
Week 3 (Days 15,21)Finish all remaining units. Write short notes and formula sheets for Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. Do two timed full-paper mock tests.
Week 4 (Days 22,30)Do 3-hour full paper simulations with the clock running. Check every answer against the official marking scheme. The last 2 days , only revise formula sheets and weak unit notes.

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Skipping low-mark units. Even a 5-mark unit can appear as a 3-mark question. A few marks here can change a grade boundary.
  • Studying from guides instead of NCERT. Over 80% of CBSE questions come directly from NCERT text and exercises. Guides are secondary.
  • Not practising CBQs. Half the paper tests application skills now. Students who only practise standard questions find the actual paper harder. See CBQ examples and how to answer them .
  • Leaving revision to the last week. A unit studied once and then ignored for two months will not come back under exam pressure.
  • Never attempting a full timed paper. Students who have never sat for 3 hours straight often run out of time on exam day. Time management needs practice too.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A: No. Weightage tells you where to focus , not what to skip. Your child still needs to complete the full NCERT syllabus, practise past papers, and prepare for CBQs. Also, CBSE only gives unit-wise marks officially. For Mathematics, it even states "no chapter-wise weightage." Use the unit marks as a planning guide, not a prediction.
